We've lived in our house for almost 1 year now. Last year we spent all our money on finishing the basement. Because of that, our yard was pretty sad. I mean REALLY sad. It looked pretty ghetto for a long time. This year, we made our yard the priority. We've made some good progress, but aren't quite finished yet. I've decided that a yard is an endless work in progress. We'll always have improvements we want to make over the years and that's good AND it's fun.
Landscaping is more Daniel's thing as you can imagine. But we've had a good time planning and deciding on flowers and bushes. We may not agree on everything though. Daniel has some plans for the front yard that we've had to come to some compromises on.
We got a flowering almond bush. It has turned out beautiful.
We also got a "curly sue" fringed tulip. I really like these. They are so cute! I love the fringed leaves.
And we got a couple varieties of daffodils. Which are my all time favorite flower. They're so friendly! Daniel got the bulbs for a screaming deal last fall, and I absolutely LOVE them.
All of our siberian iris' came up along with our crocus. We also got an ivory halo dogwood bush for the island. We planted a day lily out in the island, called blueberries and cream. It's a purple, white and yellow one. I'm dieing to see how it looks. I can't wait for it to come up.
My mom brought us some iris bulbs from our house in Washington too. My brother grew them when he was in 4th grade. When we moved to the Tri-Cities, we dug some up and took them with us. Then when my parents moved back to Puyallup, they dug some up and took them with them again. She brought us a TON of iris starts and they are growing like weeds. It'll smell so good when they all bloom. We also planted some boxwood bushes under the window. The goal is that they'll grow big enough to cover that rust line from the sprinklers. There was a huge forsythia bush by the front door when we moved in. Daniel pulled that out and we planted a lavender twist redbud. It has these really cute little pink flowers on it. We also planted some oriental poppies, fritillaria's, delphinium, a few different ground covers between the boulders and a bloomerang lilac. Which means it'll bloom twice in one year instead of just once. Daniel also bought me a Norway spruce little gem. We also bought a honeycrisp apple tree and a peach tree for the backyard.
We were going to pull the fence forward on the side of the house, but ran out of money this year. Next year we will, and then add some raised beds for a garden. In the meantime, Daniel pulled out 2 huge rose bushes that had 'reverted to it's wild state' as Daniel said. They were beasts, but now they are gone.
Daniel is in heaven. He loves getting outside and working in the yard. Sharing his passion with his boys is his favorite thing to to. So now, our yard is starting to look like people who care, live there. It's starting to look nice, I'm really happy with the result.
